smolder

The fire started in a dry riverbed just east of San Diego. Smoke blackened the sky and when one looked up, it seemed for certain that the end had come. The death of dreams. Finality. The fireman arrived as residents were leaving. The lonely battle. The uncommon dark. Helicopters. The crackle and hissing… Smolder. Afterwards, the media pointed its fingers. Who? How? Does there have to be a reason? Sometimes the world simply breaks. It gives us things to do… Houses were gutted and the dead black earth slept. A man on a nearby hillside looked over the remnants of his property. Ash colored his world. He kicked at a charred photograph album and decided then and there to build again. Spinning on his heels, he walked towards his truck. He passed by the huge Blue Haven cement swimming pool and noted that it was the only thing left virtually unscathed.

Fast forward forty years. A small ranch house now stood on the lot. The long rolling hills and sun-split boulders stretched away unimpeded into the distance. Neighbors were still a rarity and the area remained desolate. Remote. The dusty road leading to the house was festooned with rusting barbed wire fences. It stated clearly: No Trespassing. The old man had rebuilt after the fires, his kids had moved on and started families themselves. He grew old and eventually passed away.  The property changed hands. The house became a renter. It fell into disrepair and occupants cared little for the home. They squandered long nights with their crime in their veins. Vice. They had long ago given up on doing any real good in this world. They moved through life in a vacuum.  Rent was spent on escape. The owners saw no way out. The property suffered. The house soon became a bank foreclosure.

Seven months later, Billy Green sat by the side of a country road and looked at the list in his hand. He shook his head in annoyance. Turning the truck around, he soon pulled in at the start of a long meandering dirt road. It arced up and out of sight. “I guess this must be it…” He drove slowly. Billy cleaned up foreclosure properties. It was his job. He skated pools and did the best he could do. Don’t we all? He saw the house as he pulled to the top of the hill and looked over the recent foreclosure that had come his way. He slowly walked the property. It was a mess. Seeing a long dark wooden fence, Billy spotted pool tiles!  He rushed forward. “All the way out here!?”  He looked at the pool as it spread out on the back of the property. He couldn’t believe it. The pool was actually bigger than the house. Strange. The Blue Haven was deep in black water. Frogs were in the water and it reeked from a few feet away. The transitions looked massive. Billy made some phone calls. He would need help.

Billy called in some friends and the cleanup began in earnest. Brian Fick, Riverside Shawn, John Torchia and Mike Lopez all joined Billy in the draining mission. The pool was a mess. To all appearances, it hadn’t been used for its intended purpose in a long time. Decades. The crew laughed as the water and muck were pumped away and the pool’s secrets were revealed. It was stellar. They kept it to themselves and rode it for a few months. The area is virtually uninhabited. They were left alone. Eventually, it needed paint and the crew gave her a fresh new skin.

The pool was a secret. It was kept that way. The big Blue Haven sat so far out in the wilderness that it was a journey just to get there. The crew rode it for a few more months then it sat again. Neglected. Wasps and frogs moved back in. The house squatted there… the years moved by.

filthy lady

Ripperside Shawn and I crawled through the mist in my truck. It was winter and the mountains were cold this early in the morning. The Blue Haven lady waited. We drove up the long dirt lane. Shawn was going to check the pool for the first time in a few years. I had never been there. As we approached the house, we saw a car in the driveway and a trailer parked nearby. Surprise. Defeat. “Damn!” I frowned into the morning…  Shawn said little but his disappointment was evident. “Well, lets go… its gone.” I told Shawn to wait a minute. I wanted to –at least– look at this pool that I had heard so much about.  I got out of the truck and as I approached the house, I saw a man walking towards me. I smiled and waved. As it turned out, this man had bought the property. We told him the story. Pools. Skating. He seemed intrigued. He let us drain it then and there. He shared in our stoke. The pool was thrashed. Elements and neglect had taken a heavy toll. Shawn and I spent several weekends draining, sanding and painting the pool. We rode it and kept the crew tight.

the original crew reuntited

We decided to get some pals together after we painted it and have a fun little session. We got the original crew together and had Billy Green, Brian Fick and the others all in for some fun. Sometimes…  you can go back and do it all over again!  One day the owner said that he knew nothing about skateboarding but he knew who Tony Hawk was. Surprise? Since this man had shown us so much kindness, I made a phone call. Tony Hawk, Josh Stafford, Brian Fick, Lance Mountain and Kevin Staab all rolled out together. The owner was so happy. He couldn’t believe it.

Josh Stafford – hanging one high

The session was fun. Everyone fought to keep their speed on the big transitions and there was quite a bit of laughter to be found. Tony Hawk didn’t play around. Rock-n-rolls, backside airs, tailblocks and ollies were thrown down in quick order. Lance rode like a champ. Inverts and loveseat frontside airs went into the books. Stafford killed it all day… We rode for a few hours and it was inspiring to see Staab, Stafford, Hawk and Mountain all rolling around in a backyard pool. I must admit that I was very pleased to have had a small part in making such a thing happen. In the end, good things went down. The sun dropped over the hillside and the wind picked up. Everyone left in good spirits. In the past, there was a bit of bad juju associated with the property. Fire. Loss. Drug use and neglect. Skateboarders flipped it all on its head. After sessions like these, we can make things right. Karma debt is paid. Peace falls once again over a quiet San Diego hillside. The birds are free and they run these grounds….

Bob Biniak – Baldy

Bob Biniak – In the Mt. Baldy pipe. September 1976

Bob ‘The Bullet’ Biniak. He was a pioneer. Images of Biniak adorned the walls of skateboarders homes everywhere. He was one of the fastest skaters ever! Hence the name: The Bullet. Wes Humpston and I were hanging out one night. He showed me an old video clip from the Fireman pool. It was around 1976. Wes told me that Biniak was the first guy he ever saw do frontside forevers and work a pool frontside to frontside in any fashion…  the video footage was awesome. Bob Biniak is gone now but his legacy continues. Thanks to the Bolster archive for the image. Skate- Ozzie

Buster

Buster Halterman – tail grab one foot
Wellsville Pa. Barn Ramp August 1991

I was thinking about Buster this morning. I miss that dude. We don’t see each other that often. At one time, I lived with the Halterman’s and we would ride vert together in the barn. Those days are some of the best memories I have. I miss those times. Dave & Chris Cohara, Scott Ward, Jim Howell, Nick Kook, Squim, Mike Breen, Jason Wagner, Ryan Zahn…  we had such a rad crew. We would all meet up on Friday nights at the Halterman farm, drink coffee, pad up and ride until really late. We would get up in the morning and Bad H — Busters dad– would make us fried eggs and stuff, then we would do chores and start skating all over again. Saturday nights were spent eating pizza at a local spot, farting on each other and talking about how rad Mike Frazier was. Sunday: repeat. Twenty years can get behind us all pretty quickly. Time on rewind. I really miss you guys. Love- Ozzie

Chris Miller – Dew Tour Diary III

Chris Miller

This was an amazing event overall and not just the bowl comp. The Dew Tour made some massive upgrades to their entire event from comp courses and ramps to hospitality and spectator areas, concerts and a really cool interactive sponsor village. If you missed it, try to make it out next time because it was great. As a bowl skater of over 35 years, I’d have to say the this was one of the best competitions I’ve ever seen. I’ve been to The Hester Series, Gold Cup, NSA, X Games, Vans, CPH and many others and the was right up with the best of the best. If you’re thinking I am just saying this because I drank too much Mt Dew this weekend, let me explain my reasons.

First, the bowl itself is among my top 5 ever skated. It’s got flow and lines that are open to high speed transfers, big vert style airs and lip tricks as well as more technical skating in the shallow end. It’s versatility is showcased by the contrasting performances of Ben Hatchel and Pedro Barros.

Pedro Barros enroute to victory

Second, is the event arena itself. Dew Tour built a very spectator friendly viewing area. Bleachers on 3 sides and the VIP control tower on the other. There just wasn’t a bad seat in the house. Third, is who was there. At Ocean City we had ams skating the Free Flow Finals, Pros and Legends and even a locals session with Mt Dew “unlocking” the bowl for local shop crews to ride. On the deck and on the judging panel we had east coast legends and locals hanging with the pros and just generally having a good time. And finally the performance of all the skaters involved. I saw too many amazing runs and tricks to explain them all but the skating was amazing. Here’s my highlights.

Pedro Barros was on another level and is the most exciting bowl skater to watch on the planet. He easily won the Pantech Beach Championships with his high energy on edge style. Twice as fast and high as most in the bowl and 110% from start to finish. His transfers from shallow to deep were jaw dropping amazing.

Bucky Lasek- 2nd Place

Ben Hatchell – 3rd Place

Ben Hatchell’s lip tricks in the shallow end as well as his padless vert skills made me stoked. He has so many hard tricks and can do them seemingly anywhere he wants and makes it look easy. Watching my son Zach skate. He had a few too many falls but was shredding the bowl with some of the best flow and style of anyone in the finals. As a father and skater it was a pretty magic moment to be commentating on NBC national television while he ripped the bowl apart! – Chris Miller

hold on to what you’ve got

They gathered on the horizon like a black plague. Leprous. The end of all good in this world. The buildings had turned to dust. The stars burned out. I shivered. I lit a small fire and checked the shotgun. I had five shells in and nine extra. If they came again, I’d have to be careful. This would probably be it. The last attack had been brutal. They fell back and watched as I hacked one to pieces with a shovel, lit his head on fire and stuck it on a stick as a warning. I shrieked at the godless sky in primitive fury. I don’t think they liked that too much but I didn’t really care what they thought.  They pushed and now I was pushing back. I pitied them. Outside the house,  I could hear them gathering…  grunting, shouts, screams of the dying. Those that have escaped told stories of mind-bending horror. “They were peeling the skin off…”  I stopped such thoughts and prepared myself. I took my long Gerber Mark II knife and slit my forearm lengthwise. Rivulets of blood ran onto the floor. I was surprised at the color. In the dim light it was black. “Well, one of my past lovers had called me a black-hearted bastard… I guess she was right.” I mumbled to myself and chuckled. Taking two fingers, I smeared blood across my cheeks and face. I put on my war paint as it was time to take a stand. Picking up the shotgun, I heard the rush of approaching feet as the door burst inward in a shower of wood and violence…

Grant caressing some lady finger under the glare of a San Burn wilderness

I woke up with a start…  my phone was buzzing. A truck rumbled through the intersection outside. Clawing at my phone, silence soon reigned again at Ridiculous. I peered at the time. 5:53 am. I pulled myself from the bed and made coffee. I shook my head to clear away the remnants of a nightmare world. What dreams I sometimes have! I mumbled and stretched as I looked at the pool in the backyard. Pool pals were coming to visit. Devin Scott, Theo Van Bruggen, Grant, Jen, Josh Nelson, Brandon, MRZ, Chelsea and Al would be over at around nine am. Ridiculous resident and all around ruler-  Bunk- was getting up and ready as well. I drank coffee and listened to Massive Attack – Angel…  memories of apocalyptic battle faded with the growing dawn.

Josh Nelson- rock-n-roll

Bunk- light box

Chelsea Castro- first grinds in a backyard!

Al Brunelle- punishing zombies and killing it!

The crew arrived and everyone was really stoked to be going out and skating. We wanted to get an early start as the temperature was already in the nineties. By noon it was going to be a brain burner. We loaded up and headed out. First pool. Fire pool. Everyone jumped in and swept and cleaned. The girls surprised everyone and quickly put lines down. Chelsea pulled her first grinds in a backyard pool. Devin, Theo and Grant threw down light box and Al hammered disasters and other insanity. Josh Nelson pulled rock-n-rolls and Bunk crushed light box. MRZ took some amazing photographs but the heat was already beginning to take its toll.

Devin Scott mauled the Triple Bubble…

Brandon Wong- deathbox… all day long.

Theo giving up some High Fivage

We headed out and stopped for refreshments. Cool beverages. Life. The next pool was going to be the Triple Bubble. Theo had been wanting to get into the Bubble since he saw us drain it last summer on the BTO. It was his turn and after a sweep and a quick cleaning, he didn’t disappoint. Side cup grinds, deathbox lappers and all around ripping were put in under the heat. The Triple Bubble has a big tree that provides welcome shade and we were all posted up trying to take advantage of this fact. Brandon Wong decided that he wasn’t going to stay on his BS deathbox attempt. The promise of a “High Five Parade” from everyone changed his mind. Minutes later, that ghost was slaughtered. Good stuff! Regardless, the heat was intense and after everyone had a good session, we headed out again…  San Burn Gnar Dino. It lived up to its name.

Theo punched the shallow end silly… FS 5-0

Josh Nelson wasn’t playing around at all… BS Ollie

Jen dropped her brew just long enough to put the drop on this BS Gnarler

Big Al with a big Heelamonster- Yikes!

friends- hold on to what you’ve got… it could be much worse.

I had to leave and deal with some things but Bunk took the crew over to a nearby pool for a ten minute quickie but by then, the heat had really become unbearable. The entire day made me think of a few things. My dream had been fresh in my mind. It was of a bleak world. A world of no happiness, no love, no friends… only despair and violence. I have been around the world. I have seen things. People live in a violent world right now! War. Conflict. Catastrophe. It made me think that we might want to hold on to what we have. What we have is far better than what is brooding on the horizon. Fini. Thanks to the crew and to MRZ for the images. Skate- Ozzie

Dew Tour Diary – Sergie Ventura

Chris Miller

Sergie Ventura
Do you remember when you were a little grom? Before you would go skate, you would pop in one of those old skate videos of one of the old NSA comps!? Whether it be Del Mar, Upland, Virginia Beach or Terror at Tahoe? Remember watching the guys and getting stoked on things you couldn’t do yet but you wanted to watch the video just to get ideas of what you wanted to try? Well, during the Legends jam, it was exactly that,  but live and direct during the Pantech Beach Championships at the Ocean City Dew Tour!

Lance Mountain

El Gato

Totally feeling like a kid again– along with the rest of old school guys in the crowd — I had the hairs stand up on my arm watching my idols destroy the bowl just like back in the day!
The field consisted of a chosen few including Miller, Cab, Hosoi, Lance, Grosso, Ngoho, Salba, TMag and El Gato.  Different bowl, different situation. There were different elements to deal with but they all ripped and exemplified why they are legends.  Grosso did his long rock slides and 50/50′s further than anyone! El Gato did invert reverts and fakie nose blunts at almost 50 yrs old! TMag was ripping as a Lasekland local and representing!

Steve Alba

Jeff Grosso

Salba was rolling in the deep corner like it was nobodies business! Lance skated amazing and was up to his old antics like back in the day!! Ngoho was as smooth as a babies butt with long rockslides around the corner. He also added a variety of airs in the deep end! And Miller…. It was that time again, Miller time! He did the biggest FS airs around the corner and ending his run with the Ollie to truck to boot. The energy was ecstatic! Every one in the crowd was so stoked to see their skate heroes skate live.  If you missed it, you’re only gonna read about it but it will not even be the same feeling. The hairs on my arms were standing up the whole time. – Sergie Ventura

Chris Miller- Dew Tour Diary II

Pedro Barros

Chris Miller – Pro Bowl Prelims

I realized today that I am spoiled by California weather. The east coast is just a whole other deal and after yesterday’s rain, sun, lightning, rain, etc. and then todays extra sunny hot humid sun,  I realized I am a fair weather Encinitas baby. East coasters: you are tougher than me!

Alex Sorgente

Fortunately for me they saved the evening sesh for the Legends and ran pro qualifiers during the part of the day when the sun was in the ‘on’ position. I watched all the qualifiers and some amazing skating went down. Great skating by all the usual suspects like Bucky Lasek, Hatchell, Sandro, and Andy Mac. They were great as the results show. But this isn’t really meant to be a recap or blow by blow. It’s just my point of view.  For me, heat five was the highlight of the day. Pedro, Charlie Blair and Alex Sorgente! Holy crap. Amazing opening runs. Absolutely on fire. And it just went on from there for the next four!

Andy Macdonald

Pedro Barros is incredible. Over head frontside airs off the shallow hip into an eight foot melon 540 into the deep pocket! Shredding lines, grinding all the way around the corners, covering ground like no one else… Just absolute maximum limits skating. His first place Qualifying position is well deserved. So you’re in a heat with Pedro who is going nuts, what do you do? If you’re Alex Sorgente you  answer back with your own brand of incredible skating. Certainly not as flat out but more control and a deep bag of tricks landed Sorgente in to 6th place for the cut. Really this ranking doesn’t quite do his skating justice today. He was skating great and will be a force in future pro bowl events no doubt. I am exited to see what he does in Sundays final.

Tom Scharr

The other stand out in heat five was Charlie Blair. While Charlie did have a few too many falls to make the cut to the finals, he did some amazing padless shredding. Charlie has a very unique style and trick selection and great energy in his skating. So fun to watch…

Zach Miller

The results are what they are, and heat five was amazing, but I do also want to say congrats to my son Zach for making the finals! Zach is coming into his own as a pro and has great power, speed and finesse in his style. Easily some of the best lines and speed out there and a 9th place slot for finals to show for it. Stoked for you Zach! – Chris Miller
